The MD’s Ten Steps to Success

1. Best of the best
Be the best in your field or genre, and always aim high. Remember, the sky isn’t the limit when there are footprints on the moon.

2. Know what’s up
Stay informed about what’s hot and what’s not. Make sure you’re on top of the latest trends. No one wants to sound like last year’s next big thing.

3. Stand out
Make music that lasts. It has to be distinctive – nothing beats a memorable hook. You want people walking home from your gigs humming your chorus.

4. Be original
Everyone hates a copy cat, so don’t try to be Arctic Monkeys sound-a-likes. If you can see the bandwagon, you’re obviously not on it.

5. Lyrical ability
No matter how great your track is, if your lyrics aren’t up to industry standard, you won’t get signed. Simple as that.

6. Want it
You have to give blood, sweat and tears. Image is nothing unless thirst is everything.

7. Be cool
Work hard, but don’t be too desperate. It is not a good look.

8. Think big
Size does matter. You have to have international appeal if you’re planning on being a global star.

9. Longevity
Be prepared to be versatile. People’s tastes change and your music will have to adapt if you don’t want to be a one-hit wonder.

10. Know your stuff
Staying informed is vital. Read music magazines, connect with people in the industry, and keep and open mind. Most importantly, keep networking through The Music Directory.
