Marketing in Record Labels - The Music Directory

Marketing

The record company is responsible for marketing bands and refers to all the forms of publicity that you have to pay for including, adverts in magazines, shops, billboards, music videos etc... Unsigned artists can't approach a marketing departments, however it is good to understand what they do if you are in the position to get marketing help.

Marketing handles ALL aspects of selling your music or image to as many people as possible, and in the most positive way possible. From album artwork to prime time promo television slots, the marketing department is like an overeager friend who thinks you are so good that everyone should have your latest cd and want the same haircut as the lead singer and the same wardrobe as the guitarist. They take who you are and sell it to the world.

While most unsigned bands wont come anywhere near a marketing department, it is worthwhile thinking that if you did get lucky and sign a deal, what would the marketing department do with you? If you cant describe your music very well, the chances are that they wont be able to either, so bear that in mind. Marketing jobs are also highly sought after, so a good understanding of PR and promotion is an essential quality.

A lot of labels do all their own advertisements, so marketing deparments are also a good place for graphic designers, camera-people, or press officers. Bear in mind that you will probably have to promote a lot of bands that you might hate, so if you don’t want to sell your soul then maybe marketing isn’t for you.
