Album Review - The Attic Lights

Five well-tuned guys who formed a The Attic Lights from Glasgow/Mallaig/Newcastle have added a new twist to rock-pop.

After doing a bit of research before listening to their debut album, previous reviews have received their music well and have dubbed them as being the next big thing from up North.

I received two very impressive CD cases with fancy sketched cover designs. One was their latest album titled, Friday Night Lights and the other a single called Wendy.

Vocalist, Kev Sherry describes the album as, ‘the feeling you get on a Friday night – that feeling when you’ve got the whole weekend in front of you.’

My take on it was this…

The first track (Never Get Sick of the Sea) is definitely something that you could listen to on the way home from a long day at work. Their style has a mix of the Beach Boys and The Beatles with subtle hints of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, yes it is an odd mix but it works and they meet the contrast well.

With nine more tracks to go, I felt riveted to find out what I could expect from the next song. It is difficult to not toe-tap while it’s playing although by the sixth track I did feel that all of the songs merged into one as nothing stood out from the rest.

Still four more to go, hoping one of them will jump out of my headphones and make me want to listen again. Their single called Wendy was every bit Beach Boys’esque although I can imagine it being one of the tracks that people would most enjoy singing along to.

Uncut crowned their debut as ‘Hugely infectious’ and The Fly, ‘Spellbinding’. I think the combination of styles and the energy you get from the album is electric however somewhat repetitive. Their vocal style is similar to bands from the 60s and the music overall is filled with melodious harmonies and intense, soulful, melancholy power and emotional depth.

Never Get Sick of the Sea just sold it to me, it was the best track to open with and Winter On (Track 10) was the perfect way to finish. It’s just a shame that the others didn’t deliver as well.

The band includes, Kev Sherry (vocals, guitar), Colin McArdle (vocals, bass), Jamie Houston (guitar, vocals), Tim Davidson (guitar) and Noel O'Donnell (drums, vocals).
